Sustainable camping with Campercontact

The world around us is constantly changing, and as a society we are growing in our awareness of the impact we leave on our beloved planet. Fortunately, we want to make that 'footprint' ever smaller, and at Campercontact we are determined to do our bit to ensure a sustainable future for now and for generations to come.

When choosing a holiday destination, we often face the dilemma of CO2 emissions when travelling by motorhome or e.g. plane. Although we don't always have full control over this, we can make conscious and sustainable choices during our travels. And that's what we at Campercontact like to contribute to.

Our long-term goals are therefore to facilitate and motivate sustainable choices within the motorhome community, while maximising the socio-economic impact of tourism.

At Campercontact, we would like to show how we contribute to a world where motorhoming becomes more sustainable! We believe that small changes can make a big difference and also realise that this has to happen step by step.

Campercontact Sustainability Awards

In 2023, we proudly launched our very first Sustainability Awards at Campercontact. A special campaign in which, in addition to the best motorhome stopovers of the year, we also looked for the most sustainable sites of the year!

Our mission was clear: we wanted to recognise sites that are committed to sustainability and actively contribute to protecting our beautiful nature. With a careful selection process, we focused on key sustainability aspects, such as green energy, water treatment and waste separation, among others.

We were hugely surprised by the response from participating motorhome stopovers. More than 88 sites participated in our green Award! It was inspiring to see how many sites are passionate about sustainability and committed with conviction to a greener world.

During our search, in addition to our own criteria, we discovered several innovative initiatives such as rainwater filtering, selling local products and even bio toilets!

Greener travels

When you choose a sustainable motorhome site, you contribute to a greener future. These sites make efforts to reduce their environmental footprint and have taken measures in areas such as energy conservation, water management, waste management and sustainable food production. This ensures less damage to the environment and better preservation of the natural environment.

With the presentation of our annual Awards, we took the opportunity to shine a spotlight on several motorhome stopovers and campsites that are already doing a fantastic job on sustainability and making greener choices. Why not add one of these special sites to your favourites? That way, you can save them for your next adventure trip and contribute to promoting sustainable tourism at the same time!

In addition, choosing sustainable motorhome sites can also add to the experience of your motorhome trip. After all, you are in a beautiful environment that you want to damage as little as possible. Being aware of our impact on the environment can make us feel more connected to the nature around us.

Green Key eco-labelled sites

In collaboration with Green Key, we have provided sites on our platform with the well-known Green Key eco-label. This means that when you see this label on a site on our app or platform, you can be sure that the site has sustainability high on its agenda and applies it in all aspects of their operations. This includes energy and water conservation, the use of eco-friendly cleaning products, active recycling, and thoughtful choices regarding organic food and sustainability labelled products.

As a motorhomer, you can reduce your own ecological footprint by choosing sites with a Green Key eco-label. That way, you will not only contribute to a more sustainable future, but you can also enjoy an environmentally conscious travel experience.

At the moment, you cannot yet filter by Green Key eco-labels but our developers are working on this. So that you as motorhomers can easily choose sustainability in the future.

Reduce your carbon footprint while motorhoming

It is generally believed that an RV trip is often a more sustainable choice than a flight holiday, but of course this also depends on several factors. Including the distance of the trip, the number of people travelling, how you deal with resources and how you influence the places you visit. However, there are some tips that will ensure you make your motorhome trip at least as sustainable as possible!

1. Choose greener fuels: consider biodiesel or other eco-friendly fuels that reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This not only reduces your carbon footprint, but also contributes to cleaner air and better air quality for everyone.

2. Minimise waste: take the time to carefully separate and recycle your waste wherever you go. Use reusable containers and bottles for food and drinks to avoid single-use plastic. Together, we can keep our beloved destinations clean and pristine.

3. Local delicacies and produce: Taste local cuisine and support local markets for fresh produce. By doing so, you reduce the carbon footprint associated with food transportation and promote sustainable agricultural practices. Do you need a new torch or mug for your travel, for example? Then make a sustainable choice in this by shopping at Camperhomie, for example.

4. Travel energy-conscious: install solar panels on your motorhome to generate your own green energy. This will make your trip independent and energy efficient, while enjoying modern amenities without relying on traditional energy sources.

5. Respect nature: motorhome in designated areas and follow nature conservation guidelines. Leave no trace, respect local flora and fauna, and enjoy the environment without disturbing it. This way, future generations can also enjoy these beautiful sites.

With these tips, you can at least make sure you travel environmentally conscious!
