In summer, you can enjoy nice sunny weather and hike in the beautiful mountains. In winter, these mountains are then perfect for skiing!

Mandatory to bring to Austria

In Austria it is compulsory for motorhome owners to always have a safety vest, warning triangle and first-aid kit in their motorhome. Are you the driver of the motorhome and wear glasses? Then you must always carry a spare pair of glasses.

Speed limits in Austria

  • The speed limits in Austria:
  • Within built-up area ≤ 3.5 tonnes: 50 km/h
  • Inside built-up area > 3.5 tonnes: 50 km/h
  • Outside built-up area ≤ 3.5 tonnes: 100 km/h
  • Outside built-up area > 3.5 tonnes: 70 km/h
  • Motorway ≤ 3.5 t: 130 km/h
  • Motorway > 3.5 t: 80 km per hour 
  • Fine indication from 20 km per hour: maximum €35. 

Toll in Austria

For most Austrian motorways it is mandatory to drive with a toll vignette This applies to motorhomes under 3500 kg. You can also choose to purchase a digital vignette but beware: order it well in advance, the vignette will be valid 18 days after purchase.

If you have a motorhome that weighs more than 3500 kg, you must have a GO-Box in your motorhome instead of a vignette. You buy these at one of the sales points near the Austrian border. You pay a €5 deposit for this so-called GO-Box and then have it on loan. You have to put at least €75 credit on this card, when you return it to ASFiNAG you will get the unused credit back. Winter motorhoming in Austria

During the winter season it is mandatory in Austria to drive with winter tyres under your motorhome. The rule applies from 1 November to 15 April. The minimum profile depth is 4mm. Sometimes snow chains are also mandatory when indicated.

Environmental regulations in Austria

Is your motorhome (<3500 kg) registered as a passenger car? Then environmental zones do not apply to you. Does your motorhome fit within vehicle category N1, N2, or N3? Then you are required to purchase an environmental vignette. Click here for more information about the environmental badge.
